Welcome to the RAMM architectural trail.

Before you set of please pick up a copy of the Floor Plan to see the Gallery Numbers and to use as a base guide of the Architectural Trail.

Starting in the Queen Street Reception looking at the floor near the desk you will see a series of gold circles called Quatrefoil motifs.These were added as part of the recent museum refurbishment.These particular motifs were influenced by the design of the Iron Bridge in Exeter and created by the in house RAMM design team.Look out for more Quatrefoil style motifs around the museum.

After looking at the motifs take the first left along the reception corridor and head to the Courtyard...

...Moving into the Courtyard and looking up at the café walls you will be able to see examples of Victorian brick work and design (notice the air vent) these were once the exterior walls of the museum.Another thing worth noticing is the red and purple rock with lots of tiny holes.That is Exeter 'trap', a stone that was once produced during volcano eruptions around Exeter.

Leaving the courtyard head towards Gallery 2 Down to Earth.Walk by the Lost Worlds fossil stones display and take the first right...

...Arriving in the main Gallery 2 Down To Earth and especially under your feet notice the wooden flooring called parquet.This is the original floor from when the museum was first built and has been preserved as part of the recent refurbishment.

After observing the floor head towards the doorway (surrounded by handaxes) that leads to Gallery 4 Making History...

...Moving into Gallery 3 Making History look out for the pillars that support the museum.These are good examples of Victorian industrial design and were retained and unearthed in the recent refurbishment.

...Standing near by the model of Exeter look down towards the floor to see another interesting example of Victorian design.This old possible pipe cover that divides Gallery 3 and 4 was left as part of the refurbishment.

...Heading back to the reception look out for the marble pillars near the stair case and particularly the stone carvings that join the top.This is the work of a master sculptor and woodworker Harry Hems.

...Stopping by the entrance and looking up the staircase you can see the life size statue of Prince Albert created by local sculptor Edward Bowring Stephens in 1868 as a gift to the new museum.

...Inside Gallery 5 there is another chance to view supporting pillars of Victorian industrial design.

After looking at the pillars go back on yourself out the doors turn left and head towards Gallery 2 Down to Earth and take the first left pass the timeline on the wall...

...Arriving in Viewpoint this is a good opportunity to have a breather and look through the windows into the reserve collection or read visitors comments and maybe leave a comment too.

After taking a break re-join the corridor turn left and head towards the stripy painting by contemporary artist Maria Lalic turn left again and walk up the stairs. Please note if required there is a lift which can be found in the Viewpoint area...

...In Sladen's Study many of the objects displayed here wouldn't last long in the light pouring through the windows. Scrims (cloth blinds) are needed to reduce the high light levels. As well as protecting the displays and objects the scrims also create interesting silhouettes of the exterior architecture.
