Figure in a Landscape (Zennor)
(stop 1 of 10)

To begin the sculpture trail, make your way to the Courtyard gallery in the centre of the museum, and look for display number 6.

Sculpture is made in many ways and from lots of different materials. Barbara Hepworth used wood, stone and metal for her sculptures. Her favourite way of making was to carve straight into stone and wood. But she is best known for her bronze sculptures, such as this one.

Bronze was first produced thousands of years ago. It is a metal made mostly of copper and tin. It has been used since ancient times to make tools, weapons and sculpture. Bronze can be cast into moulds to produce detailed sculptures.

The next sculpture is also in the Courtyard display on the ground floor. Look for display number 5.

Carapace
(stop 2 of 10)

Look for display number 5 in the Courtyard gallery on the ground floor.

This sculpture is called 'Carapace' by the artist Michael Ayrton. It was made in 1972 and is also made from bronze. It shows the inside of a shell which the artist thought looked like a maze. This work is named after a type of shell which covers the backs of animals such as crabs.

To find the next stop, turn right and go through the Down to Earth gallery into the Making History. The sculptures are two of the objects on open display on the walls, display numbers 31 and 32.

Gravestone Sculptures: Skull and Winged Cherub

Gravestone Sculptures: Skull and Winged Cherub
(stop 3 of 10)

In the Making History gallery, look for display numbers 31 and 32 among the objects on open display on the walls.

These sculptures from Exeter graveyards were carved from stone. Between 1600 and 1700 skulls and cherubs were used to decorate gravestones. They reminded people that life passes by very quickly.

Stone has been carved by people since prehistoric times. It is popular as stone is easy to find and lasts longer than wood. There are also many types and colours.

The next sculpture is also in the Making History gallery. Look for the large plasterwork sculpture showing a heron at a river.

(stop 4 of 10)

Look for the large plaster sculpture on the wall in the Making History gallery.

This low-relief sculpture by Geoffrey Preston is modelled in plaster. It shows a heron in the river Exe who has caught an eel for dinner. Often this sort of sculpture is often part of a series of panels that tell a complicated story.

Low relief sculpture is where the design is modelled on a flat surface. In this type of sculpture the design barely stands out from the background.

To find the next sculpture, look for display number 10 in the 1800-1900 case in the Making History gallery.

Figure of a Cat

Figure of a Cat
(stop 5 of 10)

Look for display number 10 in the 1800-1900 case in the Making History gallery.

This green cat with a glass eye is made of pottery. It was made by Aller Vale Pottery, Torquay, in about 1900. John Philips started a pottery factory in 1881 near Newton Abbott. He wanted to make pottery sculptures like this cheeky cat by hand.

Pottery is made from clay dug from the ground and formed into objects by mixing with water and firing. The earliest pottery objects date to about 25,000 years ago. The first pottery objects were small animal and human statues.

To get to the next sculpture, leave the Making History gallery and go towards the Queen Street entrance. Then turn right and head up the main stairs.

Prince Albert Statue

Prince Albert Statue

Prince Albert Statue
(stop 6 of 10)

Leave the Making History gallery heading towards Queen Street reception, then go up the main stairs.

On the main staircase there is a portrait sculpture of Prince Albert by Edward Bowring Stephens. The artist came from Exeter. He sculpted Albert out of stone. It was made after Prince Albert died in 1861.

Many sculptures of people are carved from marble. It is easier to carve than stone with a finer grain allowing more detail to be added. However, it is rarer and more expensive.

To get to the next stop, continue to the top of the stairs, then turn left and head to the Ancient Worlds gallery.

Figurine of Bes

Figurine of Bes

Figurine of Bes
(stop 7 of 10)

In the Ancient Worlds gallery look for the Egypt Unwrapped case, display number 24.

Bes was an ancient Egyptian God. There were many Gods in ancient Egypt and each had their own role. Bes was protector of households and of pregnant women and babies. He is shown as a dwarf with lion features. This statue is 2,000-3,330 years old and is made from a stone called syenite.

Syenite is a coarse and very hard rock. An amulet is an ornament or small piece of jewellery thought to give protection against evil, danger, or disease.

To get to the next sculpture, come out of the Ancient Worlds gallery, turn left and continue to the Finders Keepers gallery.

Soapstone carving

Soapstone carving

Soapstone carving
(stop 8 of 10)

Look for display number 9 in the Give and Take case in the Finders Keepers gallery.

This Inuit carving is of a fisherman with a fish. It is made of soapstone. Inuit carvings often show day to day activities. This work was carved by the artist Silacie before 1945. Soapstone carving is a symbol of national identity and an important source of money.

The people of the Canadian Arctic are known as the Inuit. They used to be called Eskimos, which came from a Native American word for 'eater of raw meat'. Now the Arctic people are officially known as the Inuit, which means 'the people'.

The next sculpture is in RAMM's 'Sea Life: Glimpses of the Wonderful' exhibition. Enter the exhibition through the Finders Keepers gallery and look for the collection of glass jars.

Look for the collection of glass jars in the Sea Life: Glimpses of the Wonderful exhibition.

These coloured sea forms are made using traditional Italian and Swedish glass making techniques. The artist Steffen Dam is skilful at creating his sea creatures. He introduces bubbles and flecks of dirt, something which traditional glass blowers never do.

This completes the sculpture tour around RAMM! Have a look at the next stop for some bonus sculpture at Exeter University's campus.

Bonus Sculpture at Exeter University
(stop 10 of 10)

This work is part of Exeter University's Sculpture Walk which has works by many artists, from well-known names such as Dame Barbara Hepworth to new emerging sculptors.

The walk takes about 2 hours and introduces you to the 39 indoor and outdoor sculptures found in the grounds of Exeter's Streatham Campus. It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk from RAMM and the D and H buses stop at the campus. Parts of the walk are not suitable for wheelchair users.

This concertina spiral design by Alexander Beleschenko makes colour swirls of movement across the North and the South glass entrances of the university reception.
